History
The Vegano Carnival is one of the most important and famous carnivals in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean that each year attracts thousands of visitors to the city of La Vega.
The Carnival began in the year 1520, when the residents of the city dressed up as Muslims and Christians. In 1947 it became a tradition in the town of La Vega.
The carnival is celebrated every Sunday during the carnival season that runs throughout the entire month of February, where groups dressed as lame devils as well as comparsas take to the streets with their colorful costumes to parade throughout the city.
On January 6, 1977, the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic recognized the Vegano carnival as the Folkloric Heritage of the Nation. In 1983, the Vegan Carnival Union (UCAVE) was formed, an institution for the organization and preservation of the values of our carnival.
